Introducing
Cyber score
A new way to measure your school's cybersecurity posture

Cyber score is the free-to-use, global framework for cybersecurity in education. Schools and school groups use their cyber score to measure resilience and highlight priorities.
With a scoring system tailored to specific regional and national standards, our cyber score helps schools benchmark their cybersecurity progress.
What is a cyber score?
Benchmark, improve, protect
Our cyber score helps schools build safer digital environments worldwide by providing a clear, actionable framework for measuring, improving, and sustaining cybersecurity resilience. By using your cyber score to guide your actions, you will reduce cybersecurity risks and foster best practices based on your most relevant guidance and standards. It's the easiest way to measure and improve a school's cyber resilience.
It sets out a long-term vision for all schools to provide a safe and secure learning environment and that no pupil’s education is interrupted by a cyber-attack.
Benchmark
Cyber score presents statements that you respond to based on the cybersecurity activities your school is taking. These statements fall under four categories:
- Planning and preparation
- Internal to the school
- External to the school
- Expectations and achievements
- By answering statements and earning achievements, you generate your cyber score, which updates in real-time based on your responses. As the tool progresses, you can benchmark your school's progress against national averages to see where you rank in each area.
Statements automatically feed into national expectations, such as the DfE cyber security standards, so that you can benchmark your progress towards these. Statements serve as a step-by-step framework that helps schools address critical vulnerabilities, enhance policies and procedures, and adopt a proactive approach to cybersecurity.
Improve
Cyber score provides actionable insights and clear pathways to improvement in a self-paced and easy-to-use way. It includes best practice recommendations based on different areas your school should focus on and structured ‘tracks’ to guide your progress.
You should see cyber score as a 'progress path' to improvement. We have developed the progression path with educationalists, using best practices adopted by hundreds of schools. Following the suggested actions and pathways will keep you on the 'happy path' of continuous improvement.
Protect
First and foremost, we developed cyber score to give every school in the world autonomy to protect themselves from cyber threats.
Cyber score is self-paced and completely free to access whether you are a Secure Schools customer or not, and that will never change.
We will continuously add statements and pathways to cyber score, guiding your school towards additional layers of protection from emerging risks and awareness of the latest and most robust preventative measures available to your school or trust.

Cyber score FAQs
Never. The statements and scoring system of cyber score will be free forever. There may be suggested actions for your school, such as conducting phishing simulations, awareness training or other actions which are 'paid' services. The fundamentals of tracking your cyber score will always be free.
For now, no. We have longer-term plans for reporting output of cyber score, but this is still some months away. Continue to conduct your self-assessed audits with peace of mind!
No. Cyber score is platform agnostic and will never ask specifically if you are using Secure Schools for your cyber resilience. We will add functionality to cyber score, which automatically 'answers' statements for you, based on the actions you take with our products and services, but you do not need to use our products to get a 'good' score.
Cyber score is a benchmarking framework which uses years of expertise in education and feedback from hundreds of schools to create a 'happy path' to cyber resilience. The current cyber score framework and statements are based multiple different standards from across governing bodies.
It may one day be its own standard, but by improving your cyber score, you will see your school's path to other recognised standards increase with each action you take.
Cyber score is available to every customer with a Secure Schools platform account! Simply log in to access and get started.
With the current set of statements, cyber score can track progress of:
- DfE cyber security standards
- Risk Protection Arrangement (RPA)
As we add more statements, we will be adding significantly more expectations, including NIST 2.0, Essential Eight, KCSIE, and many, many more.
